TWO LOCAL actress just won honors from abroad. After winning the best actress award at the Dhaka International Filmfest in Bangladesh, Gov. Vilma Santos now gets an award of merit as lead actress, again for her portrayal of Loida Malabanan in “Ekstra, The Bit Player”, a Cinemalaya entry. This is from IndieFest Film Awards based in La Jolla, California, a global film competition for cinematic gems and aims to promote filmmakers to a global audience.

According to “Ekstra” producer Atty. Joji Alonso of Quantum Films, there are thousands of entries and Gov. Vi is the only Asian who was honored among three actresses given the award of merit. The others are American and Italian. In the movie “Ekstra”, only Gov. Vi is the one given recognition. The movie and its director, Jeffrey Jeturian, were not recognized in their respective categories.

In England, Aiko Melendez won the Best Actress Award in a Foreign Language Film at the London International Filmmakers Festival of World Cinema. This is for her portrayal of a single mom fighting for the survival of her two sons threatened by a crime lord in “Asintado”, a Cinemalaya entry. In London to receive the award for her is the film’s director, Louie Ignacio, and producer, Ferdy Lapus. Congratulations!

2015 New York Festivals winners revealed; Vilma Santos-starrer Ekstra wins Bronze World Medal

The Philippines won one gold medal and five bronze medals in this year's New York Festivals. GMA-7's late-night documentary program Front Row earned the Gold World Medal in the Best Public Affairs Program category. The show was cited for featuring not only the viral Ice Bucket Challenge but for a look into the impact of the neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). One of the Bronze World Medals went to Ekstra, the 2013 Cinemalaya entry of Vilma Santos. This film about a bit player in the entertainment industry was nominated in the Best Feature Film category where it earned a bronze world medal. Three of the Bronze World Medals went to GMA Network while ABS-CBN earned one Bronze World Medal. GMA-7's Reporter’s Notebook won a Bronze World Medal in the Community Portraits category for its “Burak at Pangarap” episode. The afternoon program featured twelve-year-old Junjun whose family was left homeless when a fire razed their home and more than a hundred other houses in Malabon City. GMA News TV’s Motorcycle Diaries took home a Bronze World Medal in the Human Concerns category for its “Karapatan ng Bata” episode. It showed how poverty denies countless Filipino children their basic rights. GMA News TV’s “May Pag-asa” Station ID, a collection of stories of hope that revealed the little known tragedies and challenges behind the success of the channel’s on-camera personalities, also won a Bronze World Medal in the Station/Image Promotion category. The ABS-CBN documentary on supertyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan) also earned a Bronze World Medal in the Cinematography category.

FINALIST CERTIFICATES. The lone entry of TV5 titled Kaya (We Can) was able to get a Finalist certificate in the Human Concerns category. Four GMA entries also received Finalist recognitions. These included Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Katipunan, Reel Time and “Walang Rape sa Bontok,” one of the winners in the first Cine Totoo Philippine Documentary Festival produced by GMA News TV. ABS-CBN, on the other hand, received three Finalist citations: one for Umagang Kayganda (Wrath of Haiyan) in the Best Coverage of Breaking News category; one for its campaign "Compassion and Empathy for our Fellow Man" in the Television - Promotion/Open & IDs category and one for "Spratlys: Mga Isla ng Kalayaan" in the national/international affairs category. The winners of the 2015 New York Festivals were recognized during a ceremony held in Las Vegas last April 14. Now on its 57th year, the Festivals honored the world’s best TV programs and films from among entries submitted by over 50 countries.

http://m.abante-tonite.com/issue/apr2015/22ent_ai.htm#.VTahhc30lPg.facebook

One-two punch from Vilma
Nestor U. Torre

Philippine Daily Inquirer

Fans of Vilma Santos felt especially gratified last Holy Week, when they were treated to two of their fave’s screen starrers, one after another: Last Holy Thursday, Vilma’s most recent film, “Ekstra,” was replayed on ABS-CBN, followed by her “classic” “MMK” drama, in which she shared stellar billing with Ricky Davao and Maja Salvador.

The TV screening of “Ekstra” heartened Vilma’s fans because it was a bracing departure from her usual starrers. It was strikingly simple and acutely realistic, “daring” to cast her, not as a star, but as a lowly, faceless bit player in the movies.

Jeffrey Jeturian’s indie surprised fans with its gutsy decision to cast Vilma in an “everywoman” role that they could fully empathize with. And it delighted TV-film industry insiders even more with its spot-on and satirically “knowing” details about the un-glamorous side of the biz—where extras work for a pittance while waiting for hours and hours for spoiled and overpayed stars to finally deign to show up for their shooting or taping schedules!

Inequality

It was also such great fun for “real” stars like Piolo Pascual, Marian Rivera, Cherie Gil and Pilar Pilapil to candidly and even ruthlessly spoof themselves and their stellar colleagues, the better to drive home the key and telling point that show biz can be a vicious den of harsh and cruel inequality.

“Ekstra” is precisely the kind of film that Vilma should be making at this time in her life, when she’s so busy with other, more political concerns.

This way, she can continue to act in at least one significant movie a year, even as she focuses on more nationally “important” pursuits!

As for Vilma’s “MMK” replay, she and Ricky turned in emotionally charged and committed performances in it as the parents of a girl (Maja) with cerebral palsy.

Vilma’s character, in particular, refused to capitulate to the dreaded illness’ terrible demands and tragic consequence, and the portrayal she turned in was one of her career bests.

It’s good that our TV channels are replaying iconic shows and performances, because new generations of viewers are made more aware of and grateful for past thespic achievements, which make them more enlightened and demanding viewers today—to keep our TV-film people on their toes!

“The Healing” which raked in P110 million, 2012’s 3rd Filipino film to gross over the P100-million mark. Which film was Cinemalaya 2013’s “box office champion” – Santos’ “Ekstra”.

As I was challenged and asked by a bungling idiot: How much did "Ekstra" earn during its commercial run? Insiders place it at P67.3 million. Let's conservatively round that up to P60 million. Surely that's way, way over what "Thy Womb" earned at the MMFF where it was unceremoniously and heartbreakingly pulled out from majority of the cinemas just 3 days after it opened on Christmas Day. Director Brillante Mendoza had to "beg" the cinema owners in public, on TV news and on print to retain it in cinemas. The 7-day haul amounted to an embarrassing P13 million, a far cry from the second "kulelat" (tailender), "El Presidente" which earned P33 million. And if you aren't "demented", you'd readily remember that both "Thy Womb" and "El Presidente" had Nora Aunor in the cast! Even their cumulative earnings of P46 million could hardly compare to "Ekstra's" P67.3 million.
