Carlos Siguion-Reyna received his Bachelor of Arts degree (Interdiciplinary Studies) from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1979, and obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree in film from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1986. He received a FOCUS (Films of College and University Students) award in the United States in 1989, for his NYU thesis film Patas Lang (Fair Exchange), which dramatized a painful story of illegal Filipino immigrants and informers in New York City.

Since he made his first feature film in 1988, Siguion-Reyna’s work has regularly been exhibited in some of the major international film festivals (such those of Toronto, Berlin, Paris, Valladolid, Tokyo, Singapore, Sydney, Hawaii, Chicago, Seattle, Palm Springs, San Francisco Asian-American, San Diego Asian, London Human Rights Watch, New York Human Rights Watch) and exhibition venues (such as the Lincoln Center’s Walter Raede Theater, Directors Guild of America Theater, Prague Febiofest). His films have received nine awards from these and other international film events.

He also has ten Best Directors awards from various Philippine film industry, press, and critics’ organizations, and was elected as one of the Outstanding Young Filipinos in the field of Arts/Cinema (1996/1995).

On January 2003, Siguion-Reyna was reelected to his second term as president of the Directors Guild of the Philippines, Inc.
