Von received his Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of the Philippines College of Music in November 1993. While still in college, he composed and arranged music professionally for television, corporate events, and stage performances. He also participated in a number of international events such as the Asian Music Festival in Sendai, Japan, the International Edvard Grieg Competition for Yong Composers in Oslo, Norway, and the International Composition Competition of the SMCQ in Montreal, Quebec.

In September 1998, Von continued his music studies at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where the Jan Peerce Fellowship and the NYU Graduate Scholarship Program gave him the highest scholarship award ever given to an incoming graduate student in the history of the university. He was the only Filipino out of twenty-two students to be admitted into the Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program from hundreds of applicants around the world. He completed his graduate studies at NYU in May 2000.

Von is a composer for film, television, theater, advertising and other forms of multimedia. He is known for writing music that is a unique fusion of “old school” conservatory training and modern technology – thus, giving him a command over a vast artillery of musical genres from classical to pop; from orchestral to rock.

His musical scores for feature films like “MANO PO”, “BLUE MOON”, “EXODUS: TALE OF THE ENCHANTED KINGDOM”, “GUA AI DI” and “BAHAY KUBO” have won awards in the Metro Manila Film Festival, Gawad Sining Sine Awards, Golden Screen Awards, and the Film Academy of the Philippines Luna Awards. He has also scored independent films – one of which is the Gil Ponce film “TALL AS TREES”, which is currently being shown in a series of world premiere screenings in the United States. He has just finished composing the original score for the drama series “BABANGON AKO’T DUDURUGIN KITA” on GMA 7 and is currently working on the score for the ABS-CBN television special “BEYOND CONSPIRACY” – a documentary on the 25th Anniversary of the Ninoy Aquino assassination.

Von’s theater credits include musicals such as “IL DIVINO”, which he wrote with acclaimed TV/ Stage director Freddie Santos; “SHERWOOD”, “THE WALLOWHAT AND THE PICHAY” and “ELIXIR” for New York University; “A FIRE IN THE SOUL” for the University of St. La Salle; “3,999” for Assumption College; “LAM-ANG” and “LOS INDIOS BRAVOS” (both written with Palanca Awardee Jose B. Capino), and an original score for the Tennessee Williams classic “THE GLASS MENAGERIE” for the Ateneo.

He has music directed several concert productions and recording sessions in which he conducted choirs, pop bands, chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras. He has worked closely with the best pop and classical vocalists and musicians like Ryan Cayabyab, Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Erik Santos, Sarah Geronimo, the Philippine Opera Company, the Ateneo Chamber Singers, Acappella Manila, Ignis Men’s Chorale, Mary the Queen Children’s Choir and the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. His original scores, arrangements and orchestrations have likewise been featured in projects with the Ayala Museum, Asia Pacific Media Ministries, Holy Cow Animation, Creative Futures, Johnson & Johnson and the Kundirana Music Ministry.

Von is a senior lecturer in Film Scoring, Composition and Songwriting at the College of Saint Benilde.
