Robin Padilla was discovered and managed by film director and scriptwriter and movie columnist Deo J. Fajardo. who also produce film projects. Robin’s first movie appearance was in Mainit na Kanin sa Umaga noong 1984 at nasundan pa ng Isang Vapor Isang Tuka. Noong 1985, after the movie Bala Ko ang Hahatol, his first big break in the movies came when he was introduced in Public Enemy Number 2.
Viva Films really considered Robin as one of the film outfit’s top hitmakers. But his momentum got snagged. On October 26, 1992, he was arrested in possession of high-powered firearms with live ammunitions in Pampanga. In April 25, 1994, Angeles City RTC Judge David Rosete convicted Robin of the crime charged and sentenced him to an indeterminate penalty from 17 years, 4 months and 1 day of reclusion temporal as minimum, to 21 years of reclusion perpetua, as maximum.
Hindi likas na masama si Robin. Sa katunayan ay marami syang natulungan in and out of showbiz. Isa na rito si Larry (ice buko vendor na may katarata) which he met during his shooting.
Ang Anak, Pagsubok Lamang noong 1996 was shot inside the Philippine National Penitentiary where Robin Padilla was serving his prison term. A request for temporary release to let Robin attend the premiere was also denied. Muntik ng hindi ma-release ang film na ito due to a suit filed by Viva Films against the movie’s producer, FLT Films. Robin still has a contract with Viva Films and he was sued for breach of contract. Ang Anak, Pagsubok Lamang was basically the life story of Robin Padila. Si Robin mismo ang sumulat ng story and the theme song while he was in prison at siya rin ang kumanta nito. His prison term was cut short after he received a conditional pardon from President Ramos, thanks to the efforts of Senator Ramon Revilla who spearheaded passing that lowered the prison term penalty for illegal possession of firearms. In 1998, Robin walked out of the Penitentiary a free man again.
Robin’s first film after his release was Tulak ng Bibig Kabig ng Dibdib with Maricel Soriano. Gets Ko! with fashion trend setter Jolina Magdangal; Eto na Naman Ako with Vina Morales; Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw with Regine Velasquez (all considered as box office hits noong 2000)
Robin was also paired with the most beautiful and versatile actresses like Sharon Cuneta in Pagdating ng Panahon (kung saan kailangan pang mag-undergo ng diet ni Megastar), Ooops, Teka Lang… Diskarte Ko ‘To! with Claudine Baretto; Buhay Kamao with Rica Peralejo; Hari ng Selda (Anak ni Baby Ama 2) with Angelika dela Cruz; Videoke King with Pops Fernandez; Jeannie, Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang with Judy Ann Santos; and You and Me Against the World with Kris Aquino.
Ang Alab ng Lahi noong 2003 with Jacky Woo was the fulfillment of a long time dream of Robin. Since he was a child ay fascinated na sya sa Philippine history. This film was endorsed by the Department of Education and Culture which recommended it to all students for viewing. A horror thriller Kulimlim noong 2004 was initially offered to Jomari Yllana and Aiko Melendez. But due to couple’s marital problems ay napunta ang project kina Robin at Tanya.
Ang pelikulang La Visa Loca noong 2005 was based on the Palanca Award winning script, Penitensya Republic by Mark Meily (who also directed the film). At dahil ang original title was very serious, the production changed the title to Pasyon USA. When The Passion of the Christ became a hit in 2004, the production decided to take on Ricky Martin’s hit Livin’ La Vida Loca. Robin won a best actor awards in 2006 FAMAS, Gawad Urian and Golden Screen Award for the film La Visa Loca.
Robin crossed over to television via the ABS-CBN comedy show Pwedeng-Pwede noong 1999 with Kris Aquino and Redford White. Again, setting a trend among Philippine action stars, he was the first action star to topbill a daily action-drama series, Basta’t Kasama Kita, noong 2003 with Judy Ann Santos. From Kapamilya to Kapuso Network, Robin signed a two film-contract. Isa dito ang Till I Met You noong 2006 with Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez. Tthe second one is supposed to be a dramedy with Megastar Sharon Cuneta, under the direction of Jose Javier Reyes. This is scheduled to begin filming this October. Ang Ikaw Pa Rin, Bongga Ka Boy! will open in cinemas nationwide this April. It was originally titled Ikaw Pa Rin but upon the suggestion of Viva chairman Vic del Rosario Jr., the sub-title Bongga Ka Boy! was added so that the public would know that this is a comedy.
Nagkaroon rin si Robin ng TV series sa Kapuso network, like the top rating Asian Treasures with Angel Locsin which ended in June 2007. His present telenovela is none other than Carlo J. Caparas’ komiks novel Joaquin Burdado. Hindi na bago kay Robin ang mga risky fighting scenes dahil most of his movies and tv series naman ay mayroong kakaibang style ng pakikipagbakbakan. Robin is also known as hindi nagpapa-double kaya naman ilang aksidente rin ang nangyari sa kanya. And the latest was in the taping of Joaquin Burdado kung saan nahuli sa timing ang pagbukas ng gate kaya sumadsd ang kanyang sinasakyang motorsiklo. This happened during the shooting of Utol Kong Hoodlum.
Robin’s thriller movie Blackout failed to make it to the top entries of the 2006 Metro Manila Film Festival. When a producer of one qualified entry announced they cannot produce it, the filmfest organizers asked Unitel to fill the vacated space but Unitel begged off.
Robin used to be a Christian pero mas natagpuan ni Robin ang sarili at ang kapayapaan when he adopted the name Abdul Aziz when he converted to Islam. He put up a school for Muslim children–Ang Liwanag ng Kapayapaan (Light of Peace)– in a 1,100-square meter lot in Fairview, Quezon City. The school now accommodates up to a hundred scholars after it opened in 2007 with an initial enrolment of 30 kids in the preparatory level. The students receive free books and uniforms and even free school bus rides. He said his visit to war-torn parts of Mindanao opened his eyes to the reality that lack of education is the root of the insurgency problem in the Southern Philippines.
Marami ng napatunayan si Robin in and out of showbiz. Robin tends to be more responsible now for his actions, and has stronger commitment in helping other people, especially his Muslim brothers and sisterse. He is wiothout doubt multi-talented and is still developing himself.
We can truly say that Robin has travelled a long road from being bad boy to good man.
