Dyesebel is a popular mermaid character originally conceived by the Filipino comic book novelist Mars Ravelo. Ang first and original Dyesebel na pinagbidahan ni Edna Luna at Jaime dela Rosa as Fredo ay noong 1953 under Manuel Vistan Productions/Premiere Productions and directed by National Artist for Film Gerardo de Leon.
At dahil pumatok ang Dyesebel sa takilya noong 1953, muling tinipon ni Direk Gerry de Leon ang cast ng Dyesebel in a sequel based on Mars Ravelo’s Anak ni Dyesebel noong 1964. The movie introduced Alona (played by Eva Montes), the daughter of Dyesebel (Edna Luna) and Fredo (Jaime dela Rosa).
Si Dyesebel at ang Mahiwagang Kabibe noong 1973 was directed by Emmanuel H. Borlaza under Tagalog Ilang-Ilang Productions and it was closer to Mars Ravelo’s heroine mermaid. It was played by Vilma Santos with Romeo Miranda as Fredo. For your info, si Vilma lamang ang kauna-unahan at nag-iisang actress to play both Darna and Dyesebel both classic creations of Mars Ravelo.
After five years, muling binuhay ng Sampaguita Pictures ang Dyesebel kung saan ang synopsis nito ay similar sa Dyesebel noong 1953. Ang Sisid, Dyesebel, Sisid noong 1978 ay pinagbidahan nila Alma Moreno and Matt Ranillo III.
After almost two decades, muling pinasisid ng Regal Films ang Dyesebel. Alice Dixson played Dyesebel and was directed by Mel Chionglo. Kakaiba ang remake na ito because the name of Dyesebel’s love interest was changed. The original name was Fredo, but in this version he was named Edward and Richard Gomez played the role.
The 1996 Dyesebel was under Viva Films. Charlene Gonzales played Dyesebel with Matthew Mendoza as Fredo. It was again directed by Emmanuel H. Borlaza.
Dyesebel made a guest appearance in Darna for the very first time that was portrayed by Ara Mina noong 2005.
Similar to Dyesebel was Marina, the first fantaserye of ABS-CBN. That was first aired on February 2004, starring Claudine Barretto. Three mermaid tails were made for Claudine Barretto to play her character. Claudine Barretto took a diving course before taping started. Her role required her to swim up to 60 ft. underwater, which reportedly caused her ears to ache.
Kaya naman ang Marinara the first kwelanovela in Philippine television was aired on the same year. Rufa Mae Quinto was the only choice to portray the triplets Marie, Dolphina and Aira in Marinara.
First time on primetime TV ay ang upcoming fantasy drama ng GMA, another adaptation of Mars Ravelo’s classic ay mapapanood na natin. The top executives of Kapuso network formally announced that Marian Rivera is the next Dyesebel and Dingdong Dantes (as Fredo) will be her leading man. This series will be directed by Joyce Bernal na sya ring direktor ng Marimar.
Phenomenal star of Marimar and now the next Dyesebel on Philippine television pero sino nga ba si Marian Rivera? Marian Gracia Rivera, in real life, was born on August 12, 1984 in Madrid, Spain. Her parents are interracial couple Francisco Javier Gracia and Amalia Rivera. Her parents separated two years after her birth. They flew back to her mother’s hometown at ipinagbilin siya sa kanyang lola na si Francisca Rivera sa Bacoor, Cavite.
She graduated with a degree in A.B. Psychology. She left hometown para ituloy ang career as a ramp and commercial model. She was discovered by TAPE Inc.’s executive producer, Tony Tuviera. From then on, she starred in a series of afternoon soap operas for TAPE Inc. and GMA Network.
Her first TV series was Kung Mamahalin Mo Lang Ako noong 2005. She received awards as Best New Female TV Personality sa PMPC Star Awards sa TV series na Agawin Mo Man ang Lahat at nasundan pa ito ng Pinakamamahal with Oyo Boy Sotto as her main leading man. Muling nasubukan ang galing ni Marian ng mapasabak sya sa mother roles for the afternoon Philippine-Malaysian drama Muli and the primetime telefantasya Super Twins.
Kasama rin sya sa horror movie na Pamahiin with Dennis Trillo and Iya Villania. The following year, she starred in two MMFF-P movie entries, ang Bahay Kubo at Desperadas. Nabigyan sya ng malaking break ng mapili bilang MariMar noong 2007. Her first lead role sa movie ay ang My Bestfriend’s Girlfriend, a certified box office hit. After Marimar nga ay ang most awaited TV series, ang Dyesebel.
According to Marian ay nagpadala pa ang Regal Entertainment ng DVD copy ng Dyesebel ni Alice Dixson for her reference. She admits that she watched the versions of Alice Dixson, Vilma Santos at Charlene Gonzalez before.
She has undergone full training for underwater scenes.
The cast of GMA 7’s Dyesebel are Jean Garcia (as Luisa/Lucia, mother of Dyesebel and reigning queen of the seas); Lotlot de Leon (as Banak); Mylene Dizon (as Dyangga); Wendell Ramos (father of Dyesebel); Bianca King (as Betty); Ricky Davao; Luis Alandy; Hero Angeles; Teri Onor; Paolo Ballesteros; Marco Alcaraz; Aljur Abrenica; Kris Bernal; Michelle Madrigal; Rufa Mae Quinto and Alfred Vargas.
Their pilot taping was last Sunday, April 6 2008 in Coron Palawan at according to Marian ay very difficult daw pag sa ilalim ng tubig ang scene pero worth it naman nung na-playback nila yung shoot.
Let us wait and see kung hanggang saan ang kayang gawin ni Marian for Dyesebel. I know that Marian could give her best at kung hindi man mapantayan ay malampasan pa nito ang dating ratings ng Marimar.
