Some 50 guild members of the Film Academy of the Philippines—thirty of them from the Actors’ Guild—will attend a consultation meeting organized by the Academy and the Intellectual Property Office to discuss performers rights and/or royalties.
The meeting, called Punto de Vista, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Function Rooms D and E of the Quezon City Sports Club on E. Rodriguez avenue, Q.C.
Fifteen IPO resource persons and staffers will be providing the guild members basic knowledge on copyrights and royalties. They will also consult the Academy participants regarding the feasibility of organizing a collective management organization for the performing arts sector.
Attendance to the meeting will be free of charge and lunch and afternoon snacks will be served.
Participants must confirm their attendance by sending their Meeting Registration Forms by Fax or e-mail on or before March 3, 2008. Ms. Pie Lique of the IPO secretariat maybe contacted at 632 752 5450 (local 206) for confirmation and details.
Last Feb. 12, Director-General Leo G. Martinez and several guild presidents met with Precious Leaño who was assigned by the IPO to coordinate with the FAP.
They agreed that the consultation meeting will principally tackle the problem of performers’ right vis-à-vis the films they appeared in. These will involve getting royalties from their films’ income from TV and cable rights, video rights and foreign sales.
DG Martinez said that the music industry has been collecting royalties for their composers, singers and musicians for the past several years and added actors and actresses—as well as the other members of the creative staff of a film—must also receive royalties.
He added that if amendments are needed to the Intellectual Property Law for performers to be able to assert their rights, the academy will seek the assistance of the IPO for this purpose.
Present during the meeting were Conrad Poe of the Kapisanan ng mga Artistang Pilipino sa Pelikula at Telebisyon; William Mayo of the Philippine Motion Picture Directors’ Association; Pablo S. Gomez of the Screen-writers’ Guild of the Philippines;Isagani Sioson of the Filipino Society of Cinematographers; Manny Morfe of the Production Designers Guild of the Philippines; Prof. Josefino Cenizal of the United Film Musical Directors Association of the Philippines; and Rollie R. Ruta of the Motion Picture Audio Society of the Philippines, Inc.
