REAL LIFE MOVIES by Corie Henson  |  Posted in Articles  |  on Fri, Aug 16, 2013

Behind the success of Superman, Batman, Spiderman and the animation movies, Hollywood is alive again with nonfiction stories. At least in the last decade, nonfiction is getting a good share of the box office.

One of the blockbusters in the nonfiction genre was The Blind Side. Directed by John Lee Hancock, the sports drama featured Michael Oher, a player of American football.

Another nonfiction hit was The Social Network. It garnered 8 academy award nominations and earned more than $200 million.

Adapted from the book The Accidental Billionaires, The Social Network was directed by David Fincher.

The aspect of inaccuracies reminds us of Eskapo, ang filmbio ni Eugenio Lopez, Jr. at Sergio Osmeña III. With Christopher De Leon as Geny and Richard Gomez as Serge, the movie was a suspense thriller which was shown in 1995.

The success of the movie helped Serge dahil yun ang naging springboard niya sa kanyang senatorial ambitions.

One huge inaccuracy of Eskapo was the liaison of Geny and Serge in the prison. In the movie, there was a scene showing the prisoners communi-cating in morse code fashion.

Directed by Tom Hooper, the historical drama is about the stammering of King George VI. It earned more than $400 million in its international release in 2011.

King George VI was the father of the present Queen Elizabeth, the mother of Prince Charles.

Shown in 2012, the movie Lincoln is a bio of US President Abraham Lincoln. Considered a historical epic, Lincoln was directed by Steven Spielberg which received 12 academy award nominations and the Oscar’s best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis.

The biggest of them all was the Vizconde Massacre.

Unfortunately, Hubert Webb was a victim of the Vizconde Massacre because the movie had alluded to him as the killer. Si Kris Aquino ang bida sa mga nasabing movies which were directed by Komiks King Carlo J. Caparas.

In the making, ayon sa narinig namin, ay ang true-to-life story ni Benjamin Garcia who is popularly known as Ben Tumbling. A stuntman turned most wanted criminal in Malabon, Ben Tumbling was gunned down by the cops in 1981.

Ben Tumbling will be portrayed by Jerico Estregan, son of ER Ejercito a.k.a. Jeorge Estregan, Jr. By the way, ER has also been making nonfiction with his epic El Presidente and Asyong Salonga, Hari Ng Tondo.

In 2009, MV Maersk Alabama was hijacked in the high seas by Somali pirates. A good material for an action-suspense movie, there were thrilling scenes when the crew of the ship exerted their best effort in repelling the intruders which lasted for 4 days.

With the crew numbering 20 and an unknown number of the pirates, the 4-day ordeal was packed with action and suspense. Eventually, the crew surrendered when the ship captain offered himself as hostage.

To calm his nerves, Captain Phillips played mental chess by himself.

Based on the book A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Sony Pictures had assigned Tom Hanks in the title role. Captain Phillips is directed by Paul Greengrass

Another good material for a movie is the life and times of Nelson Mandela, the charismatic leader of ANC (African National Congress) who later on became president of South Africa after his 27-year incarceration as a political prisoner.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom is directed by Justin Chadwick with Idris Elba in the lead role and produced by The Weinstein Co.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom will hit the theaters in November 2013 while Captain Phillips is slated to be shown in October. The local nonfiction Ben Tumbling will also be shown before the year ends.
