A pioneering event that will unfold a month before the Berlin International Film Festival in February next year will focus on Filipino films.
This was relayed to the Film Academy of the Philippines by Philippine Ambassador Delia Domingo-Albert in a letter sent to FAP Chairman Atty. Espiridion D. Laxa.
The newly-organized event—titled Asian Hot Shots Berlin– is billed as the first Asian Film Festival of the Berlin Filmfest which is scheduled for February 7 to 17 next year.
The event is envisioned to drum up attention in projecting the Asian film industry prior to the actual holding of the Berlinale and the Philippines has been chosen as the first country in focus.
The event’s objective is to present past or classic and contemporary films from Asia to Germans and international audiences.
Every year, the festival will have a theme with an innovative program from countries with established film industries such as China, Japan, India and Korea, as well as Southeast Asian nations.
According to Ambasador Domingo-Albert, “it will therefore be a valuable opportunity for the Philippine industry to be highlighted in this pioneering event.”
Ms. Laura Gerber, one of the event’s organizers, is now in Manila and will be staying up to August 23 to seek the support and assistance of film-related agences and institutions, like the FAP, and the private sector, especially film producers.
Ms. Gerber will be spearheading the selection of films that will be invited for
the festival and will also be attending the Cinemanila Film Festival as a guest to provide her a good opportunity to observe up close the local film industry.
Ambassador Domingo-Albert informed Atty. Laxa that the Ms. Gerber would call on the Academy during her Manila visit to discuss a possible collaboration regarding the said festival.
