Film trivia master Tante de Ramos lists down the actresses who graced the Sampaguita studios on Gilmore St. during the late fifties. Here is the list he sent to us:
Tessie Agana—She was introduced as a child star in the 1949 film Himala ng Birhen. She also appeared in in the box office hit Roberta.
Marlene Dauden—She appeared as a ballet dancer in Rosa Rossini for her first starring role. She followed this up with a role opposite Dolphy in Silveria, ang Kabayong Daldalera, a 1958 comedy film.
Myrna Delgado—She appeared in the 1953 film Recuerdo, and also in Tres Muskiteros and Menor de Edad, both in 1954.
Tita Duran—She appeared in the 1946 film Guerilyera. Her other memorable films early films included done film Kasintahan sa Pangarap and Vod–a-Vil opposite Pancho Magalona, her reel and real love partner.
Josephine Estrada—One of the beauty queens who entered showbiz first appeared in Birds of Paradise.
Linda Estrella—The real mother of Tessie Agana, she appeared in the 1941 film Princesita where she was as introduced.
Amalia Fuentes–She was introduced in the 1956 film Prince Charming which starred by Gloria Romero, Ric Rodrigo and Juancho Gutierrez. She later starred in Rhodora, Pretty Boy and Ako ang Maysala with Romeo Vasquez as her loveteam. Her real name was Amalia Muhlach.
Blanca Gomez—She was introduced in the 1962 film Anak sa Pagkakasala opposite Eddie Gutierrez. She became the wife of Danny Picache, a PBA Player.
Rita Gomez—She starred in the fantasy film Diyosa with Ric Rodrigo. Other notable films were Reyna Bandida, again with Ric Rodrigo and Cesar Ramirez, and Society Girl.
Liberty Ilagan-She appeared in Sugat sa Balikat a 1962 drama film with co-star Jose Mari. She also starred opposite Vic Vargas in Diegong Tabak in his first title role .
Jean Lopez—She appeared in films like Tansan with Dolphy and the 1962 film Barilan sa Baboy Koral with Jose Mari and Rodolfo “ Boy” Garcia. She married actor Romano Castelvi.
Loretta Marquez—She appeared in Gintong Recuerdo with Carmen Rosales, Blanca Gomez, Josephine Estrada and Gina Pareno.
Tita Munoz—Her first starring role was in the 1952 film Ang Kasaysayan ni Rudy Concepcion. She also appeared also in Texas, ang Manok na Nagsasalita together with Shirley Moreno, Nelly Baylon and Nory Dalisay.
Gina Pareno—She appeared as the local superwoman Darna but also starred in Dalawang Muhkha ng Anghel with Dindo Fernando, Bert Leroy Jr., Nory Dalisay and Victor Wood as directed by Mar S. Torres.
Barbara Perez—She was introduced in Chabacano in 1956. Her first starring role was in the 1957 film Ate Barbara. Her other movies included Pampanga with Rogelio de la Rosa, Linda Estrella and Rudy Francisco (as directed by Jose de Villa) and Pagdating ng Takipsilim opposite her husband Robert Arevalo.
Susan Roces—She appeared in the 1960 films Sa Hardin ng Diyos and Prinsesa Gusgusin. Her leaqding men included Romeo Vasquez, Tito Galla, Jose Mari and Eddie Gutierrez.
Lolita Rodriguez—She first appeared in Halik sa Lupa with Carmen Rosales, Tony Marzan, Jean Lopez, Lito Legaspi, Naty Santiago and Eddie Garcia under the direction of Conrado Conde. Another memorable film was Gilda with Eddie Arenas in his first starring role.
Gloria Romero—The Queen of Philippines movies first appeared in Palasig with Cesar Ramirez in the title role. Her other films included Mister Kasintahan with Ramon Revilla Sr. and the 1959 film Paru-parong Bukid with Luis Gonzales, Dolphy and Daisy Romualdez under the direction of Armando Garces.
Daisy Romualdez—She was introduced in Rosana in 1955 and also appeared in Katawang Lupa and Salamat Po, Doktor in 1960. She was proclaimed Miss Philippine Movie in 1966. She became the wife PBA player Manny Paner.
Carmen Rosales—She appeared opposite Rogelio de la Rosa in Senorita (1940) and Panambitan (1941). Her other films included Inspirasiyon with Van de Leon and Si Si, Senorito with Oscar Moreno and Fred Montilla.
Rosemarie Sonora—After beginnig as a child actress, she got her first adult role in the 1971 film Cadena de Amor. Her leading men included Pepito Rodriguez and Ricky Belmonte.
Sylvia la Torre—She appeared in such films like Takas sa Bataan (1950), Buhay Pilipino (1952) with Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran and Gorio at Tekla (1953). The three films were drected by her father Olive La Torre.
Cynthia Ugalde—She was another beauty queen who entered showbiz. She appeared in Birds of Paradise with beauty titlist Josephine Estrada as co-star.
Norma Valles—Her first starring role was Kilabot sa Makiling (1958), with Mario Montenegro and Romeo Vasquez. She also appeared in Mariposa (1955), Teresa (1956) and Monghita (1957)
Alicia Vergel—Her first starring was Basahang Ginto in the title role. She appeared opposite husvabd Cesar Ramirez in Bernardo Carpio. She was the mother of action star Ace Vergel and Beverly Vergel.
