BEHIND THE CAM by Corie Henson  |  Posted in Articles  |  on Fri, Apr 27, 2012

Part 1

The production of the film LARGAAA gave me an insight on how a movie is made.

And what caught my curiosity was not what the camera was capturing but what was happening behind the camera.

THE CAMERA. From what I know, the digital camera is handheld so it is safe to assume that it is portable. But in the actual observation, portable nga ang digital camera pero hindi praktikal buhatin dahil mabigat ito.

Bukod sa natural weight ng digital camera ay kinakabitan pa ito ng iba-ibang filter to control the glare of the sun. “Sasabog kasi yan,” sabi ng cameraman, referring to the over exposure of the shot due to excessive light.

For ease of manipulation, nakapatong ang camera sa tripod. Hindi ito ang pang-karaniwang tripod dahil maraming paa ito kaya hindi ganung kasimple kung tatanggalin at ikakabit kung lilipat ng area (within the location).

CAMERA GEAR. Ito ang parang riles ng train to afford the camera smooth movements or gliding effect.

THE LIGHTING UNIT. Importante raw ang lighting unit dahil natural light is not preferred.

For this reason kaya maraming klase ng ilaw.

Using a 1 kilowatt lighting unit amid the morning sun

Using HMI lighting unit would require a generator set. More or less ay P15,000 ang arkila ng generator at ang fuel sa maghapon ay aabot ng P5,000. That amount may ruin the equilibrium of the production’s budget.

Shooting in the daytime normally requires filters, shades and reflectors. That combination of the shade and the lighting unit is a requirement of the camera.

But according to another cameraman, there are other digital cameras which are not too sensitive to lighting.

THE AUDIO RECORDING. It is noticeable that the cameraman has a headset.

For noisy environment, lapel mic is a good choice except kung excessive ang ingay like a motorcycle or truck. However, lapel mic can be used by only one character kaya kung maraming characters ang may dialogue ay marami ring lapel mic ang kailangan.

Depending on the available equipment, the audio can be included in the camera footage or it can be a separate recording. Bahala na ang Sound Editor sa separating at mixing ng audio together with other sound effects and desired music.
