Philippine Ambassador to Oman Joselito A. Jimeno has requested the Film Academy of the Philippines for DVDs of classic Filipino films for their collection of Filipiniana arts and culture in the country’s embassy in Muscat.
In a letter to FAP Director General Leo G. Martinez, Ambassador Jimeno said they have converted a small space in their chancery into a library and audio-visual room to encourage the Filipino community to borrow books on Philippine history, literature, arts and culture, government and social studies.
Jimeno said that when he assumed the ambassadorship on August 2011, he noticed the lack of worthwhile activities to occupy the free time our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families.
He added they intend to open the library, including the films in DVD, to the local community in Muscat and other parts of Oman.
In this connection, Director General Martinez has requested the guilds to draw up their list of classic Filipino films to decide the first batch of films to be donated for the Oman embassy collection.
Films directed by National Artist for Film Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Avellana, Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Eddie Romero and Fernando Poe Jr. will comprise the initial set of films to be sent to Oman.
Jimeno emphasized that this project will surely promote appreciation of our culture and heritage through cinema.
