With headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) recently held a week-long workshop for the benefit of nine Asian countries.

Designed and created by Africans, led by Simon Ouedraogo, the WIPOCOS application is currently being used in 11 countries in Africa since its implementation in June of 2011.

The introduction of WIPOCOS (software for Collective Management of Copyright and Related Rights) to Southern Asian countries was the idea of WIPO in cooperation with SCAPAR (Societies’ Council for the Collective Management of Performers’ Rights).

Presided by Candra Darusman, head of WIPO Singapore which served as host of the workshop, the whole day sessions included a full hands-on learning under the guidance of African experts Mr. Ouedraogo, Boukary Sawadogo and Romen Hasha Dube.

Although a resource person on the topic of Collective Management, Saemund Fiskvik of Norcode, claimed that he is also a participant of the technical workshop. CISAC shared their experience thru the courtesy of Ang Kwee Tiang, a lawyer who is regional director of CISAC.

The main objective of the workshop is to provide technical assistance and moral encouragement to the CMOs with the ultimate aim of inter-connecting the databases of all countries using the WIPOCOS software.
