Hereunder is the second batch of 20 former beauty pageant winners who also made waves as showbiz personalities, specially in the movies:
Ruffa Gutierrez- She was 1993 Bb. Pilipinas and the same year’s Miss World’s second runner up winner. A contract star of Regal Films, she was already in the movies even before she vied for the Bb. Pilipinas title. The eldest in a brood of children of Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama, Ruffa is still visible in films and television. One of her latest films was Working Girls with Isa Calzado, Cristina Reyes, Jennlyln Mercado, Eula Valdes, Bianca King and Eugene Domingo.
Amparo Karagdag- In the early 1950s, she was chosen Miss Luzon while representing her hometown Zamboanga City. She latter appeared in severa filsthat included Lihim na Bayani and Magkapilas ng Langit (directed by Eddie Infante) and 1952’s Tatlong Kabanata ng Buhay which also starred Danilo Montes, Anita Linda and Patria Plata, produced by Premiere Productions.
Melita De Leon-She was a contestant in the 1956 Miss Goldwyn Girl of the Philippines and later appeared in some films produced by Premiere Productions. She hailed from Lucena City, Quezon.
Maria Isabel Lopez – She was 1982’s Miss Philippines. She later made waves by appearing in some Celso Ad. Castillo-directed films. She appeared opposite Olivia Ortiz in Dingding Lang ang Pagitan.
Edna Luna- She was once Miss San Antonio (Cavite) before she was cast as the original Dyesebel of Premiere Productions where she appeared opposite Jaime dela Rosa. She was also in the cast of Premiere Productions’ Paltik with Anita Linda, Jose Padilla Jr. and Efren Reyes Sr. Her real name was Bituin Edna Minon Luna.
Melanie Marquez- She was Miss International in 1979 after emerging winner in the 1979 Bb.Pilipinas beauty pageant and became Miss International. Her story was made into a movie titled The Melanie Marquez Story. But she appeared opposite major action stars like FPJ, Lito Lapid and others
Eleanor Medina- She was proclaimed Miss Visaya in the Miss Philippines beauty pageant in 1953. She later appeared as the lead title role in Babaing Kalbo and later Si Og sa Army opposite Jesus Ramos and Leila Morena.
Maricel Morales – She was one of the Miss Philippines pageant contestants during the 1990s. She appeared opposite Eric Fructouso in a film produced by an independent film outfit.
Margie Moran-The country’s second Miss Universe title holder in 1973. Margie later appeared in films like Oh! Margie Oh! with Cocoy Laurel as the leading man.
Evangeline Pascual- As 1973’s Miss Republic of the Philippines winner, she ended as first runner up in the 1973 Miss World beauty contest. She was FPJ’s leading lady in Mediavillo.
Cristina Pacheco- She was 1953’s Miss Philippines. She later appeared in a film directed by National Artist for Film Gerardo. The film was Saigon which also starred Leopoldo Salcedo, Ben Perez, and Vietnamese actor Khank Nyo. It was produced and filmed in Vietnam by Lebran Productions.
Lilibeth Vera Perez – A Miss La Salle during her college days, Lilibeth was a former child star in their family’s own movie outfit, Sampaguita Pictures.
Aurora Pijuan-She was Miss International in 1970. She later appeared in films like Popeye Atbp. opposite Ariel Oreta and in Sunugin ang Samar with Ramon Revilla Sr. Her son TJ Manotoc is still a host in several TV programs.
Pilar Pilapil – She was Miss Philippines in 1967. She later appeared in El Matador with Dolphy and Panchito which was shot entirely in Spain. She has been appearing in movies and TV for the past many decades.
Miriam Quiambao- As 1999’s Bb. Pilipinas, she ended first runner-up in the Miss Universe beauty pageant. She later appeared in the movies and was co-host of Paolo Bediones in GMA 7’s Pinoy Meets World.
Precious Lara Quigaman-As Bb. Pilipinas, she won the Miss International title in 2005. She later appeared in films, inclding Kapag Tumibok ang Puso (Not Once But Twice)opposit Sen. Ramon “ Bong” Revilla Jr.and AiAi delas Alas,
Gloria Romero- She was Princess of Visayas in the 1954 Queen of the National fair, a third runner-up at the River View High School in her hometown in Pangasinan and the second runner-up in the 1956 Miss Goldwyn Girl of the Philippines beauty contest. She reigned as queen of Philippine movies and is still portraying mother and grandmother roles up to this day. She first appeared in films like Palasig with Cesar Ramirez and Mr. Kasintahan with Sen. Ramon Revilla Sr.
Venus Raj- She was the Miss Philippines of 2010 and was fourth runner-up in the same year’s Miss Universe pageant. She has appeared in ABS-CBN programs and in various commercials.
Carmen Rosales-She was Miss Radio Queen of 1936. In her early films she starred opposite Jose Padilla Jr. in Arimonding-munding and teamed up with Rogelio de la Rosa as a surefire box-office love team in such films as Takip Silim, Senorita, Jasmin, Tampuhan and Pagsuyo.
Chat Silayan -As 1980’s Miss Philippines, she was a third runner-up in the same year’s Miss Universe beauty pageant. She was the daughter of consummate actor Vic Silayan.
Carmen Soriano- She was Miss Manila in 1957 and proclaimed the Martine Carol of the Philippines that same year. She first appeared as a talent in Walang Sugat then became the lead actress in Somewhere My Love for LVN Pictures, Her son Lloyd Samartino also appeared in films and television.
Cynthia Ugalde-She was 1962’s Miss Philippines winner who vied for the Miss International title. She appeared in filmproduced by Sampaguita Pictures.
Marita Zobel – She won second place in the 1957 Pretty Girl contest of Sampaguita Pictures. Her first movie was Bad Boy opposite Lou Salvador Jr. Her other films included Si Marita At Ang Pitong Duwende with Robert Campos as the prince. It was both produced by LVN Pictures. Mary Ann Blanche was her real name.
