The first Gawad Direk Awards of 2003 recognized the contributions to Philippine cinema of five directors, namely, Emmanuel Borlaza, Luciano B. Carlos, Celso Ad Castillo, Ronwaldo Reyes (Fernando Poe Jr.) and National Artist for Film Eddie Romero.

For its second batch of awards, the DGPI has expanded the field of awardees to include other film craftsmen, thus this year’s cross-section of awardees.

Director Buenaventura transformed the action film genre into a relevant, socially conscious and meaningful cinematic art form. Director-actor Eddie Garcia was the compleat kontrabida who graduated into leading man status in action films and sex comedies, and also became an award-winning director of well-crafted drama films. Dolphy, aka King of Philippine Comedy, was cited for his comedic talent, preserved in entertaining films, most of which he himself produced.

Gloria Romero is recognized for her dignified professionalism and dedication to the cinematic arts. Rosa Rosal is cited for her dual achievements in the fields of cinema and social work, unmatched by no other, as the driving force of the Philippine Red Cross. Armida Siguion-Reyna is recognized for her untiring efforts to uphold freedom for the artist, while seeking a niche for Philippine music and cinema as truly unrestricted and uncensored cultural forms.

The Gawad Direk Awards were first given in 2003, nine years after the DGPI was incorporated. The current DGPI officers are Board Chairman Mark Meily, President Tony Reyes, Vice-President Jose N. Carreon, Secretary Joey Romero and Treasurer Mel Chionglo. Board members are: Emmanuel Borlaza, Quark Henares, Jeffrey Jetturian, Carlos Siguion-Reyna, Maryo J. de los Reyes and Joel Lamangan.

DGPI President Tony Reyes and Chairman Mark Meily extend the guild’s invitation to all film industry members and workers, as well as the general public, to attend the second Gawad Direk awards on November 18.
