The Philippine Motion Picture Directors Association (PMPDA), in coordination with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), will hold a seminar-workshop on filmless filmmaking in 3D as an advanced course in digital motion picture production.

The workshop-seminar will be held at the Janet’s Beach House in Matabungkay, Lian, Batangas. Mainstream as well as indie directors with their respective cinematographers are invited to participate.

Participants will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Those interested in attending the seminar-workshop may contact Dir. William G. Mayo, PMPDA president, or Ms. Evangeline Bulay, secretary through these contact numbers: 374 -7561/ 4153880 local 805/ mobile 0918-4439497/ 0927-6184781/ 09204402716/ or E-mail : rekdiwgm@yahoo.com

The project background for the seminar-workshop reads:

Since the introduction of HD films for commercial exhibition whether shown directly on video or transfer back to 35mm color prints via the process of video scan KINESCOPING, HD films are still regarded as inferior to 35mm film. Filmmakers usually resort to trial and error on the process resulting to poor or unacceptable output. This is highly attributed to incorrect, poor or lack of knowledge on the capability, potential and proper workflow in HD filmmaking The best part of HD filmmaking is that its lower in cost, it can be highly innovative, and of course, such innovation lies in the imagination of the beholder! Leapfrogging technologies and the ever expanding technology with its plethora of options has been instrumental in bringing about a sea change in the way films are made.

Statistics from the National Cinema Association of the Philippines (NCAP) shows that in the year 2008, 80% of the local movie industry output is in digital, sometimes using low resolution DV. This seminar / workshop shall highly improve filmmakers understanding of this technology in movie making.

PMPDA President Mayo said the seminar will provide and teach the art and craft of HD filmmaking through a balance of instruction, hands-on filmmaking, and immediate directing experience. Participants will be behind the HD camera from the first day of class. Participants will learn about and explore the numerous visual, dramatic, and technical challenges that directors face in filmless movie making.

He added that in addition to directing, and editing their own films, participants shall assist other members of their crews in the roles of director of photography, assistant cameraperson, and gaffer/grip, providing everyone with extensive set experience. Ultimately, through intensive hands-on instruction, our goal is to empower filmmakers to artfully, cinematically tell their stories in digital technology, that is theatrically acceptable.
