This Valentine’s Day let us glance at the showbiz couples, who, from the start until now, are still together.
Although both deceased now, the marriage of Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran was a classic example of till death do us part. As leading lady and leading man, Tita and Pancho have a long list of movies to their credit. Their son Francis and granddaughter Maxenne are the reminders of Pancho and Tita.
Another durable union is that of Robert Arevalo and Barbara Perez. Never was there an instance when they were threatened with rumors. Likewise with Amado Cortez and Gloria Sevilla (although Amado passed away a few years ago after serving the Philippine consulate in the U.S.). Amado acted as the surrogate father to Gloria’s children by Mat Ranillo, Jr. Copying drama from the screen to reality, Gloria Romero and Juancho Gutierrez called it quits a long time ago. But Juancho came back to Gloria’s arm recently.
Of course, the celebrated wedding (or elopement) of Fernando Poe, Jr. and Susan Roces is a memorable one. According to Susan, it was Dec. 16, start of Simbang Gabi, when out of the blue, she and FPJ decided to make a go for it.
Other contemporaries are Rosemarie Gil and Eddie Mesa whose children, Michael, Mark and Cherie, are all in the entertainment industry. Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama, another dramatic union with lots of ups and downs, remain together. Their daughter Ruffa and son Richard entered showbiz with Richard now holding the torch with his Mulawin character. Still going strong is couple Tito Sotto and Helen Gamboa. Helen used to sing and Tito was in the recording industry when they met. Their daughter Ciara is active in the movies. Another couple worth mentioning is Johnny Delgado and Laurice Guillen. Johnny as a character actor and Direk Laurice shy away from the limelight and possibly from intrigues. From faraway Canada, Romano Castelvi and Jean Lopez came around for a short visit.
The younger set has Bong Revilla and Lani Mercado who got married when they were still in their teens. Their son Jolo recently figured in the celebrated pregnancy of Grace, Rosanna Roces’ teenage daughter. Rudy Fernandez and Lorna Tolentino are showing strength in their relationship. Likewise with Christopher De Leon and Sandy Andolong whose children are kept from the public eye. Another durable tandem is that of Ronnie Ricketts and Mariz. Ronnie’s latest film UNO fared well in the box office. Surviving a nasty rumor, Richard Gomez is 4-squares behind beauteous wife Lucy Torres.
Despite the odds they faced in the US, Albert Martinez and Liezl survived and came back home unscathed. Although talks say that the couple is at odds with Amalia Fuentes, Albert and Liezl seem happy with their 3 children. Same thing with William Martinez and Yayo Aguila. William was acquitted in a drug case last year. Amidst the rumors of a breakup, Ricky Davao and Jackilou Blanco are still happy together. Same can be said of Ricardo Cepeda and Snooky Serna. Ricardo and Snooky are still active in televesion.
Some more happy couples targetted by rumors of a split-up are Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzales, Ariel Rivera and Gellie De Belen, Janno Gibbs and Bing Loyzaga. Aga was linked to a young star, Ariel was linked to a former girlfriend and Janno was linked to several female actresses.
Happily married are Dingdong Avanzado and Jessa Zaragoza, looking contented with their baby. It’s a quiet life in the province for Gary Estrada and Bernadette Allyson. There’s news that Gary and Bernadette are going to repeat their marriage vows in Thailand. Still very much around are Romnick Sarmenta and Harlene Bautista. Another happy couple is Gladys Reyes and Christopher Roxas. Gladys is very much active in the TV but Christopher is rarely seen.
The list of durable unions believe the myth that showbiz personalities cannot remain to be happy couples. May this Valentine start a new era of decency and higher family values in showbiz so that next year we will have a longer list.
Happy Valentines to all the couples, married or not.
