INTERNET PHENOMENON (part 2) by Mon Nepomuceno Orbeta  |  Posted in Articles  |  on Fri, Jun 11, 2010

And here are the exact words of the Journey members about their new Pinoy soloist:

“I stumbled upon Arnel like in the eleventh hour when I was ready to give up, and I went, Wow!’ said Neal.

“From the first point that I heard (him) until he came over not long afterward to audition with us, we’ve had what I call GBS—goose bump surplus,” said Ross, the band’s bass player.

And so it happened. Arnel Pineda is now the lead singer of the Journey and continued to WOW fans and admirers all over the world. Indeed, fame and opportunities knocked at the doorstep, and it all happened because of Youtube! ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VccPl_uLpWA&feature=related )

But WHAT EXACTLY IS YOUTUBE? YouTube is a video-sharing website created on February 2005, on which users can upload, share, and view videos. Three former PayPal employees are the founders of YouTube and they are Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. They developed the idea after they had experienced difficulty sharing videos that had been shot at a dinner party at Chen’s apartment in San Francisco which Jawed Karim failed to attend. He wanted to see the party even just through the video.

YouTube’s early office was above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. The domain name www.youtube.com was activated on February 14, 2005, and its website developed over the subsequent months. The first video uploaded was on April 23, 2005 entitled Me at the zoo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw ), a self-video by Jawed Karim at San Diego Zoo. This video can still be viewed.

YouTube first offered a beta test of the site in May 2005, six months later the official launch was made. The site grew rapidly and in July 2006 it was announced that more than 65,000 new videos were being uploaded every day, and the site was receiving 100 million views per day.

In November 2006, YouTube was bought by Google Inc. and is now operated as a subsidiary of Google. The company is now based in San Bruno, California.

Most of the contents on YouTube had been uploaded by individuals. Unregistered users can watch the videos, while registered users are allowed to upload unlimited number of videos. Videos with potentially offensive content are available only to registered users over the age of 18.

Worldwide, YouTube was ranked as the third most visited website on the Internet, behind Google and Facebook.
In May 2010, it was reported that YouTube has more than two billion views a day, proving to be one of the most favorite pastime nowadays, and proving the fact that Internet culture has indeed predominantly occupied lives of people worldwide.

YouTube made it so easy for anyone with an Internet connection to post a video that can be viewed worldwide within a few minutes. Thus videos using music of well-known artists has been subject for violating copyrights law, and so YouTube has been criticized for failing to ensure protection against the law of copyright.

But YouTube reiterated that in their site, at the time of uploading a video, users are always shown the following message: Do not upload any TV shows, music videos, music concerts or commercials without permission unless they consist entirely of content you created yourself. The Copyright Tips page and the Community Guidelines can help you determine whether your video infringes someone else’s copyright.

But despite this prompt, there are still many unauthorized clips from TV shows, films and MTV uploaded on YouTube. YouTube does not view videos before they are uploaded, and so it’s up to copyright holders to issue a takedown notice under the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

On March 26, 2009, Moymoy Palaboy’s account on YouTube was suspended due to copyright infringement. YouTube added that although the duo’s lipsync videos were original, the songs used weren’t. But fans set up a petition to ask YouTube to lift the suspension of the account for sentimental reasons, and so a new Youtube account (with new name- momoypalaboyteam) was created. Eventually, the original account was reactivated on April 8, 2009.

YouTube has faced criticism not only about the copyright law issue, but about the offensive contents in some of its videos as well. The uploading of videos containing defamation, pornography and materials encouraging criminal conduct is actually prohibited by YouTube’s terms of service. And since YouTube does not views the video before the uploads, it relies on its users to flag the content of videos as inappropriate, and a YouTube employee will view a flagged video to determine whether it violates the site’s terms of service. With these criticisms, YouTube responded by stating: “We have strict rules on what’s allowed, and a system that enables anyone who sees inappropriate content to report it to our 24/7 review team and have it dealt with promptly.”

As criticisms and issues were raised, several countries have blocked access to YouTube, countries such as The People’s Republic of China, Morocco, Thailand, Iran and Libya.

Some schools worldwide have also blocked access to YouTube as a measure to prevent students from viewing illicit and inappropriate videos.

Others critics may view YOU TUBE as totally EVIL that it may be instrumental to lust, pornography and violence, but for Moymoy Palaboy, Charice Pempengco and Ariel Pineda, YouTube is definitely a Godly instrument that has brought them fame, wealth and fortune.

So, if it happened that you have uploaded, or soon will be uploading your own personal video on YouTube website, don’t be surprised if an agent will suddenly be knocking at your doorsteps. Because once you “Broadcast Yourself”, who knows? You might be the next YouTube Sensation that the world will adore.
