The MOWELFUND Board of Trustees elected Mrs. Ma. Azucena Vera Perez-Maceda, popularly known as Manay Ichu, as the new chairperson of the foundation to replace the late Atty. Espiridion Laxa.
This was forwarded in a letter by MOWELFUND Executive Director Boots Anson-Roa to Director-General Leo G. Martinez of the Film Academy of the Philippines.
Actor Rez Cortez was named as the newest member of the board of trustees.
National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Director Eddie Romero remains as the vice-chairman of the foundation.
The other trustees of the MOWELFUND, now on its 36th year, are Composer Josefino Cenizal, Director Edgardo ‘Boy’ Vinarao and Ms. Anson-Roa in a concurrent capacity as executive director. Former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada is the Chairman Emeritus and Founder.
Manay Ichu was instrumental in the beginning of the 1980s for the creation of the Film Academy of the Philippines by encouraging the formation of different guilds of talents and workers in the local film industry.
As PMPPA president, Manay Ichu commissioned the Carlos J. Valdez & Co. to prepare a comprehensive study of the Philippine movie industry to enhance its development. The CJVC proposed the creation of a Filipino Motion Picture Development Board with four important components—the Film Academy of the Philippines a film fund; a film archive; and a board of standards.
President Marcos signed on January 5, 1981 Executive Order No. 640-A which created the Filmboard.
During the 23rd annual FAP awards on May 14, 2005, Manay Ichu was awarded the first FPJ Lifetime Achievement Award, an appropriate award as she had worked very closely with the late King of Philippine movies in instituting reforms and lasting benefits for the Philippine movie industry.
