Another golden leaf fell off from the branch of entertainment. Director Humilde “Meek” Roxas succumbed to heart attack in Seattle, U.S.A. on December 23, 2004.
A prolific writer, Direk Meek used to write stories for komiks. After work in the factory, he would walk several miles just to submit his stories. “Talagang ganyan sa umpisa,” he would say about the paltry sum paid him by the komiks publisher. What’s important to Direk Meek is the craft and not the monetary consideration.
Getting interested in scripts, he learned screenwriting by merely studying the pattern of the working scripts he had borrowed. After several rejections, Direk Meek finally handed a good script to the director. A string of successful screenplays followed then film directing caught his fancy. In the same style, Direk Meek learned film directing by keen observance and subtle clarifications.
Award winning writer and director, Meek Roxas wrote and directed Ang Kapitbahay for his last movie. In the stellar role is Belinda Bright with Albert Martinez and Joel Torre as leading men. Meek Roxas was very proud of Ang Kapitbahay because it is a multi-flavored film having a pinch of bold, a sprinkling of suspense, a dash of action and a cupful of drama.
Humilde “Meek” Roxas will be missed by his peers and colleagues not only in the SGP (Screenwriters Guild of the Philippines) of which he is chairman, but also in the entire movie industry.
